6:00 pm — “An Overview of Dementia vs. Alzheimer’s”

Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will enhance social workers’ skills and understanding of dementia care, including the different types of dementia. Ways to best deliver interventions and improve the quality of care for patients and their families will be discussed.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Have a better understanding of dementia, including its diagnosis, symptoms and stages;
- Evaluate and care for dementia patients and their families; and
- Recognize behavioral problems and interventions.
7:30 pm — “Dementia vs. Alzheimer’s”
Presenter:
Emilia León, LCSW.
Descriptive Summary:
This presentation will provide strategies for supporting individuals with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and their families. The impact of social determinants of health on disease progression and access to care, strategies for addressing barriers to services and the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to dementia care will be explored. Ways to discuss advance directives with patients and families and navigate complex family dynamics, including conflict resolution and caregiver support, will be examined.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify key social determinants of health that impact those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and develop strategies to address barriers to care;
- Discuss advance directives with patients and families, ensuring informed decision-making and patient-centered care; and
- Apply culturally responsive approaches and conflict resolution skills to support diverse families navigating dementia care and complex relational dynamics.

Accreditation
Social Workers
The 1199SEIU League Training and Upgrading Fund SW CPE is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers under provider #0286. Licensed New York State (NYS) Social Workers are required to provide a NYS license number to receive a certificate of credit. This course is approved for three (3) continuing education hours.
All Other Healthcare Professionals
All other healthcare professionals will receive a general certificate of attendance. Please check with your accreditation board with respect to receiving credit for this program.

Eligibility for 1199SEIU Members
Training and Employment Fund Members
Members must have been a part-time or full-time employee for at least one year, work at least three-fifths of a regular workweek, and work for an employer who contributes to the 1199SEIU Training and Upgrading Fund or the 1199SEIU Greater New York Education Fund.
City of New York Education, Child and Eldercare Fund Members
Pharmacists, Dietitians, Clinical Laboratory Practitioners and LPNs must have worked with NYC Health + Hospitals or a mayoral agency for at least one year.
