Choosing the Right Camp

Before selecting your camp provider/session, it’s important that you become familiar with them. Contact the camp and/or visit its website to learn more about the camp, and make sure that your child is involved in the selection process. The more involved your child is, the more ownership he or she will feel, which can help your child be more successful at camp!

Consider the Following in Making Your Selections

  • Is the distance away from home a concern?
  • What is the preferred session length (i.e., short or long)?
  • Do we want a co-ed or same-gender camp?
  • What type of activities are offered? Does the camp have a specialty/focus, or does it offer traditional programming where children can try a little of everything?
  • How are activities selected? Do activities require mandatory participation or are they the camper’s choice?
  • What are the camp’s facilities like?
    • Sleeping accommodations: cabin, dormitory or tent
    • Amenities: electricity in sleeping area, shower in sleeping area or toilet in sleeping area
    • Waterfront: lake, pool or both
  • Are there required and/or optional additional fees (e.g., uniforms, canteen, private lessons, off-site trips, specialty programming, trunk rentals, luggage transport, linens, laundry service, etc.)?
  • Does the camp’s mission and philosophy reinforce my own family’s values?
  • How will the camp communicate with me while my child is there?
  • How can I communicate with my child while he or she is at camp?
